“I needed a new furnace for my home here in Scottsdale and so about 18 months ago I took advantage of the end of season sales and picked up a Carrier Infinity 80 Gas Furnace. I decided on an 80% efficient model because I just don’t run the furnace enough during the year to get make up the cost difference between the unit I bought and the more efficient Carrier furnaces. I also looked at lower-priced 80% models from Ruud and Goodman but wanted the performance features that only Carrier offered.
I got bids from 3 contractors after checking around for the best HVAC prices in the area. The one guy was really pushing a bargain brand and overpriced his estimate on the Carrier ($1,500 more than the next lowest). The second contractor came in the lowest at $3,600 which included $1,600 for the unit and $2K for installation. The last bid was for $3,800. I went with the lowest bid and had the unit installed. It took 2 guys about 7 hours to do it. They had a hard time getting the thermostat to function properly and ended up rewiring it first, and then replacing it. I almost had my handyman install it. He only wanted $1,000 to install it but I’m sure he would have been stumped by the thermostat issue. In the end, I’m happy.”
